222038 SE Dialogue of Religions: Justice and Peace
summer semester 2020 | Last update: 16.11.2020 | Place course on memo list- Through text-centered discussion to inform the participants regarding the views of Judaism, Christianity and Islam on justice/righteousness and peace and their significance for the present
- To enable the participants to further develop their knowledge and positions and to continue the inter-religious trialogue on these subjects
The concepts „peace and justice“ relate to central, integral ideals of and goals in the Abrahamic religious traditions; they are at the same time seen as attributes incorporated in the Divinity itself. In the contemporary world of conflicts the importance of hoping and striving for the attainment of these goals is essential.
The underlying questions in the seminar: which intellectual and spiritual tools need to be learned and what are possible inputs from the Jewish, Christian and Islamic traditions for this endeavour. Our sources for this search will include the Hebrew Bible, the New Testament and the Koran, as well as commentaries from the “classical” traditions (Maimonides, Thomas Aquinas, al-Ghazali) and contemporary writings. Our investigations will focus mainly on the Israel-Palestine conflict and on the challenge of a European “peace of cultures”, with Austria as a case in point.
Text-based discussions and presentations by the participants, with introductions and short inputs by the teaching persons.
