A basic understanding of important developments of mathematics through history.
Exemplary methods results and achievements of mathematics, starting from ancient civilisations to the 20th century.
Lecture.
Written exam at the end of the semester.
The lecture is based on the following monographies:
- Jeanne Peiffer: Wege und Irrwege (Berlin, 1994)
- Hans Kaiser und Wilfried Nöbauer: Geschichte der Mathematik (Wien, 1984)
However, it is not necessary to read the books; all relevant material will be treated during the lectures.
