Overview of the media cultural history of early film - at the beginning of the 20th century, not only the genres that still shape cinematic narratives today are emerging, but also the star cult that has its origins in Italy (and not in Hollywood!)

How it all started...VU traces the media cultural history of silent film from the fairground spectacle to the golden years (1920s). After a brief chronological overview, our attention is directed to the successful genres of the time, such as comedy, crime series, historical monumental film and avant-garde experiments with the new medium. In addition, we deal with early film theories, the new dispositif of seeing and the incipient star cult. One focus is on the cinema of Romania.

Virtual teaching with numerous audio podcasts, many film examples, video essays and regular meetings in the virtual classroom.
