Monasteries form an important part of the heritage of Byzantine Culture and of Christian Orthodox traditions in Eastern Europe and the former Eastern Roman provinces in Asia Minor, Near East and Northern Africa. From the 5th until the 15th c. the architectural settings of monastic foundations, their churches, chapels and various buildings represent the religious characters and esthetic comprehensions of monastic life as an exclusive and separated world of the Byzantine society, influencing and determining the art historical values of religious foundations in the various countries on the Balcans up to medieval Russia.
