645202 UE Philosophy of Science "Everything turns": Computer cartography: application of geographic information systems (GIS) in the practice of historical studies.
winter semester 2020/2021 | Last update: 03.07.2023 | Place course on memo list1. Working with historical data:
• Digitize data
• Create and prepare data records independently for the GIS link
• Link created data records with QGIS
2. Working with the geographic information system - QGIS
• Create your own point, line and polygon layers
• Create your own thematic maps
3. Card interpretation
The course is divided into two parts: a theoretical and a practical one. The theoretical part deals with the development of geographic information systems (GIS), their basic elements and data models, current GI technologies as well as geodata infrastructures and interoperability of GI systems. With the support of a special free geographic information system software (QGIS) basic elements of computer cartography can be conveyed. Spatial data can be viewed, edited, recorded and analyzed using QGIS.
History is also concerned with analyzing, evaluating and clearly visualizing so-called "historical data", such as building and land parcel logs or estimation laboratories of the "The Land Register of Francis I" (see also www.franziszeischerkataster.at). From these cartographic results, new insights are often gained that cannot be derived from the existing figures. The spatial reference plays an important role here. Where did events take place or which natural conditions, e.g. the landscape relief, influenced this. The second part of the course is devoted to this part, in which thematic maps will be created using QGIS.
· Interactive work with the provided software.
· Working out the basic functions of QGIS together
· Lecture on projectors with various exercises
· Any questions that arise are answered on site
