202040 SE Philosophy: Exemplary Examination of a Topic: Varieties of Scepticism - From Antiquity to the Present
winter semester 2021/2022 | Last update: 07.02.2023 | Place course on memo list-
Topic-oriented introduction to the works of several classical authors, as well as epistemology.
-
Acquiring of basic, exegetical skills with respect to philosophical texts, as well as comprehensive skills with respect to complex, argumentative structures.
From its very beginning philosophy has exemplified a skeptical side and in its long-lasting history skeptical ideas have been a common theme. In this seminar we will be concerned with the different positions and arguments which are comprised under the label “skepticism”. Besides reading some of the classical tests (Sextus Empiricus, Descartes, Hume…) we will also approach the subject in a systematic way by taking the modern, analytical debates in epistemology into account.
Independent reading of the texts; joint discussion during the seminar.
Term paper.
The required literature will be provided in scanned form.
