Acquaintance with Catherine Elgin’s book True Enough (2017, MIT Press) and with her holistic theory of understanding.

How does science succeed in providing us with an understanding of the natural world? In her book True Enough (2017, MIT Press), Catherine Elgin answers this question by developing a holistic theory of understanding in which truth is not central. An important result of her arguments is that the line between the arts and the sciences is much more blurred than standardly assumed: scientific theories and models afford an understanding of the world in more or less the same way in which works of art do.
