At the end of the course, students will be able to look at the important classical Islamic Kalām schools on the basis of their basic questions, central concepts and methods.

The lecture offers a historical-systematic introduction to Kalam science. On the one hand, the context of spiritual history, its genesis and development are thematized. It presents both the political and social framework conditions as well as the interreligious context of their unfolding. On the other hand, the substantive formation of this science and its methods is explained using the example of the different Kalam schools. First the theological positions of the early Kalām approaches of the Murǧi'a, Qadarīya, īabrīya are explained and their influence on the later schools is shown. It then presents and analyzes the genesis and establishment history of the major theological schools of Mu'tazila, Aš'ariyya, Māturīdiyya and their interaction with the Shiite theological positions of Imāmīya and Zaidīya.
