The students know different theoretical approaches, current empirical findings and discussions on the topic of political socialization and citizenship; they are able to situate them in the research field. They are able to reflect on their relevance for political education in particular and the political dimension of pedagogical action in general.

The seminar introduces the research field of political socialization and its significance for political education and pedagogy in general. After an overview of the history of political socialization and central controversies regarding the emergence of political subjectivity and the intergenerational transmission and renegotiation of political attitudes, the seminar focuses on current developments: Questions of political participation, especially of young people, political radicalization, the exercise of and access to citizenship. A transnational perspective is adopted, which productively confronts findings in democratic and authoritarian or hybrid contexts.
