Students are able to comprehend the logic of common statistical procedures and approaches in empirical research in the social sciences and understand their application in the context of empirical research. They are able to critically receive statistical statements and independently carry out simple data analyses.
Introduction to the basics of applied statistics for social sciences with emphasis on statistical data analysis.
The lecture offers an introduction to descriptive statistics (matrices, frequency tables, measure of centralisation, measure of variation, correlation) and inductive statistics. Inductive statistics implies knowledge about how to make inference from a sample to the population and how to measure (un)certainty of such an inference.
Lecture, assessment is based on a single examination at the end of the course.
