408024 PS Introduction to empirical social research
summer semester 2022 | Last update: 30.01.2023 | Place course on memo listCurr. 2021 § 5 (1) 3: Students acquire the ability to characterise the fundamentals of empirical studies. They can assign the most important qualitative and quantitative survey methods to the respective scientific-theoretical and methodological background and decide which research questions require which methods. They are able to critically evaluate existing empirical studies and independently carry out the first phases of a research process (formulation of a research question, data collection, method reflection) qualitatively and/or quantitatively or using method triangulation.
In this seminar, students acquire basic skills in doing qualitative and quantitive social research. They will get familiar with different methods and learn to apply the right method according to their research interest. Students will have the opportunity to learn about the different phases of a research project (research question, field access, data collection, evaluation, presentation of results, etc.) Practical examples will be given and different empirical approaches with their potentials and limitations will be discussed
The lecturer will give input, the students will give their own presentations, we will discuss in plenum and in groups, and we will do practical exercises.
Input by the lecturer, presentations by the students.
Details will be announced in the first session.
