418220 VU Media and Communication Theories
summer semester 2022 | Last update: 16.02.2022 | Place course on memo listThe graduates have basic methodological and theoretical knowledge of media and communication research and are able to critically assess research results. Furthermore, they have a basic understanding of the applicability of theories of media and communication studies.
Building a sound knowledge of basic terms, concepts and theories in media and communication studies.
While communication theories examine various aspects of communicated messages or content, media theories focus on the media (technologies/infrastructures) themselves and their interplay with cultural practices. In the face of advancing processes of digitization, these theories provide a particularly well-suited vintage point for understanding our present condition, as media technologies increasingly intervene in our everyday life and our actions. This raises a number of questions, including: How do media structure our field of perception and our possibilities for action? How do the logics of the analogue and digital differ? How are knowledge, power and responsibility redistributed through the proliferation of algorithmic systems? Which developments are to be judged as problematic - and why?
