Students will be introduced to the new phenomenon of Open Strategy and the diverse tools and practices available to include internal and external actors outside traditional top management teams in the phases of strategy generation, strategy formulation, and strategy implementation. It will be discussed how strategy workshops, crowdsourcing platforms, online strategy communities, blogs, wikis, strategy jams or online prediction markets, can be applied by firms to involve diverse actors to in strategic discussions, contribute new strategic ideas or develop innovative business models. Further students will develop an understanding why Open Strategy is particularly helpful to manage disruptions.

While traditionally strategy has been limited to top management teams and has been treated with secrecy, most recently strategy processes have been changing. Today many contemporary organizations supported by new digital technologies “open up” their strategy processes through increasing transparency and inclusion of previously excluded stakeholders such as employees, customers, suppliers, experts etc.

This new phenomenon in strategy research and practice has been termed Open Strategy, and fundametally changes and challenges established processes and frameworks of traditional strategizing.

This course focuses on an in-depth examination and discussion of Open Strategy and its associated techniques, methods, benefits and challenges.

Lecture, case studies, discussions, guest speakers from comapnies pioneering open strategy, open strategy workshop experience.
