Knowledge of "classical" positions in the philosophy of history, as well as heterodox counter-positions; understanding of the characteristics of argumentation in the philosophy of history; reflection on the dis-continuous development of arguments concerning the philosophy of history in the context of the history of philosophy.

A pointed thesis of Walter Benjamin's text "On the Concept of History" is that it is the "task" of the historical-materialist approach to "brush history against the grain" (Benjamin 1974, 696f.). This lecture follows this approach insofar as it will be concerned with making a critical concept of the philosophy of history as the history of philosophy by putting up for discussion a number of "classical" and heterodox positions in the philosophy of history (e.g., Vico, Kant, Hegel, Marx, Benjamin, Heidegger, Spengler, Arendt, Jaspers, Foucault, Agamben, Didi-Huberman).
