Overview of the history of Northern Italy from the Roman expansion to the Lombards, from the Roman. Bishop as the largest landowner in Italy already in the 4th century until Charlemagne's inaugurations as emperor in Rome, from the problems of 'Celtic' and Roman identity to the exarchate of Ravenna.
