707831 VU Advanced Topics: Numerical Models in Glaciology
summer semester 2022 | Last update: 15.05.2023 | Place course on memo listA deeper understanding of numerical model applications in glaciology, which is based on several case studies and their detailed analysis, both in methods and error behaviour. Building on the aquired knowledge, the choice of suitable model techniques for a specific scientific task will be possible with confidence and an a-prioir understanding of the models applicability, sensitivity of chosen parameters, and error analysis strategy.
Possible choices for case studies to be discussed in the lecture are:
- mass conservation in ice flow models
- error behaviour in degree-day mass balance models
- mass balance models based on neural networks
The final choice will be made together with the students, who can also add topics to the above list
Combined lecture and practice units
Short paper hand in on each case study that is worked on in class, which in combination results in the final grade, with consideration of participation in class.
Basic understanding of Python, numerical methods as well as statistical methods.
