800704 AG Study Group: Gender discussions as settings of political struggles
summer semester 2022 | Last update: 19.01.2022 | Place course on memo listKnowledge of theoretical foundations, in particular concepts of gender, inequality and antifeminism as well as the significance of affective (emotional) experience in this context. Knowledge of anti-emancipatory narratives and patterns of argumentation. Competence in dealing with gender-political conflicts.
The goal of gender equality hardly seems to be discussed controversially anymore, yet gender policy issues regularly trigger heated debates. This is not only evident in the rise of anti-emancipatory discourses in politics and media culture; heated gender discussions are also part of everyday life, in the family, among friends, at the “Stammtisch”. But what are these disputes about and what could be a satisfactory way of dealing with them? In this course we analyze gender discussions from an Affective Theory perspective as settings of reassurance of existing power asymmetries and gender identities and explore how this affects the communication of emancipatory matters. Based on that, we comprehensively address possibilities and strategies for dealing with heated gender discussions.
