After the course, participants will be able to apply optical dating (i.e. one of the most important Quaternary dating approaches) to their respective subject matter across disciplines and interpret the results correctly. 

Optical (or Luminescence) dating is an important tool for studying the Quaternary. Classical luminescence dating allows the age of sedimentary deposits to be accurately constrained, enabling researchers to address many questions in areas of Earth and environmental sciences as well as archaeological contexts. Additionally, the versatility of the luminescence signal allows for novel questions to be addressed – from soil mixing rates to geological uplift rates to sediment provinancing to dating of geological and archaeological rock surfaces.

This course provides an introduction to the principles, applications, and limitations of optical dating. Beginning with an overview of the principles of the method (topic blocks followed by knowledge quizzes and discussion sessions), the many potential applications of luminescence methods are discussed through case studies. Furthermore, practical insights into OSL sampling in a field context, sample preparation, and environmental dose rate determination will be provided.
