In this seminar, we will explore the often underexposed contributions of women philosophers with an eye toward their self-understanding as well as their reception and review these contributions in the context of their respective social and historical circumstances. Women philosophers covered include Hypathia, Hildegard of Bingen, Teresa of Ávila, Mary Astell, Margaret Cavendish, Émilie du Châtelet, Catharine Trotter Cockburn, Mary Wollstonecraft, Lou Andreas-Salomé, Elizabeth Anscombe, Hannah Arendt, Simone de Beauvoir, Ayn Rand, Philippa Foot, Iris Murdoch, Simone Weil, Ágnes Heller, Judith Jarvis Thomson.
