Insight into Gogol's poetics and into the culture and society of Ukraine and Central Russia in the early 19th century; knowledge of the narrative form of the skaz, as well as the techniques of the grotesque, the comic and the absurd in drama and in the narrative text.

In the seminar, Gogol's works will be examined in terms of their poetic techniques; we will examine stories from the early cycles "Vechera na khutore bliz Dikan'ki" and "Mirgorod" set in the Ukraine, the later "Petersburg Tales", the drama "Revizor", the novel (or "poem") "Dead Souls" and Gogol’s autobiographical writings. The focus is on the question of Gogol's specific writing style (especially the skaz), the plot structure and the composition of his works; in connection with this, Gogol's (unusually modern) themes, his equally unusual position within Russian-language literature and his surprising social and political diagnoses will be analysed and discussed.

Input by the seminar leader, presentations by the students, active discussion by all participants

Regular participation, engagement in discussion, presentation of a paper, writing of a seminar paper and, if desired, a Bachelor's thesis.
