640034 SE Ancient History: Troy/Ilion - Myth, Scholarship, Fiction
winter semester 2022/2023 | Last update: 14.09.2023 | Place course on memo listMA Ancient Worlds: The students have extended specialist knowledge in Ancient History through the examination of new topics, taking into account current research trends. They have a repertoire of methods to independently analyse, critically evaluate and theoretically reflect on ancient sources and research literature. They are able to scientifically determine the relationship between ancient materials and (post)modern historiography.
MA History: Comparative considerations in the entire field of ancient history, sources and literature on a complex question. The aim is to think beyond the boundaries of epochs and to understand phenomena of myth-making.
Troia is an archaeological problem: Since Schliemann's excavations, a "Streit um Troia" has been waged in classical studies (by the way, with the participation of Innsbruck - C. Ulf). This is about contexts of the Aegean Bronze age.
Troy is a methodological problem: it is about questions about the origin and content of the Homeric epics, about the formation of a Greek historical self awareness.
Troy is a phenomenon of reception: the Homeric Trojan War was considered the beginning of history par excellence in antiquity. The multifaceted references to Troy in ancient art, literature and poetry will be the subject.
Troy is part of European intellectual narratives: versatile references to the epics as since the 19th century on the arch. finds are tangible to the present day.
1. It is your first task to develop a first topic proposal based on the materials provided on OLAT and your own research. Please note that the currently essential anthologies and monographs are available scanned, also to avoid that the existing copies are borrowed at the same time. With the monographs, the anthologies and the essays or encyclopedia entries you get an overview of the various problems. Now try to formulate a topic, a question.
2. Now you should write a maximum one-sided exposé .
3. Then we meet to discuss the exposées and it is assigned who will give a presentation during the planned block in January, and who will lead the pertinent discussion and prepare critical questions on the topic. The corrected and improved exposées are then available to everyone as a basis on OLAT .
The second phase of training and preparation of your written work is now complete. During the Christmas break, you can deepen, continue reading and research, dig up additional literature and become an expert on your topic.
