winter semester 2022/2023 | Last update: 11.09.2022 | Place course on memo listStudents have gained an insight into the history of historical sciences against the background of the global discourse on the theories of history. They are able to link current discussions about theories and methods with previous historic and transdisciplinary discourses. They are able to explain and critically reflect on issues of gender relations and their importance.
Examination of classics of history and related disciplines as well as discussion of current debates; handling of historiographical texts and insight into different conceptions of history.
What defines a city?The students deal with significant concepts of urban research. Max Weber, for example, defines a city by its material conditions, its economic and commercial infrastructure. Kevin Lynch, on the other hand, focuses on the importance of urban design elements and the so called 'visual order' of a city. The focus will be on these and other research approaches in urban studies and their significance for historical questions.
Discussions on theoretical and methodological texts, readings, presentations of the texts, inputs from the course leader, an oral exercise and a written essay during the semester.
