645405 VU (Lecture-Tutorial) Reading the Classics
winter semester 2022/2023 | Last update: 06.12.2022 | Place course on memo listStudents have gained an insight into the history of historical sciences against the background of the global discourse on the theories of history. They are able to link current discussions about theories and methods with previous historic and transdisciplinary discourses. They are able to explain and critically reflect on issues of gender relations and their importance.
After this course...
- you will have learned about theories by French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu,
- you will be able to explain his concepts field, capital, habitus,
- you will be able to relate these approaches to the field of history,
- you have read theoretical texts and worked them out together.
Social capital? Habitus? Terms you probably hear again and again in different texts, but you are unsure what exactly might be meant? And what exactly does this have to do with history? In this course we will work on the concepts by French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu (field, capital, habitus). We will then discuss how these concepts can be used to research social inequalities in history (using class, gender, and academia as examples).
Discussion of theoretical and methodological texts, reading, presentations of the texts and moderation of discussions by students, inputs from the course instructor, an oral assignment and a written assignment during the semester.
Attendance, continuous participation and active participation in discussion, moderating a discussion. End of the semester: essay or oral exam.
