While introducing basic conventions of good writing techniques. It is a pre-essay writing course in which students will learn to compose both well-structured and varied sentences as well as coherent paragraphs.
Texts will be analysed for structural elements such as unity, coherence and cohesion. Tasks will include summary writing and elementary paragraph production.
A variety of texts on engaging topics, close reading and effective use of dictionaries.
Sentence level: sentence elements and structure, relative clauses, subordination and co-ordination, punctuation (commas, colons, semi-colons etc.)
Paragraph level: unity, coherence, cohesion, content etc.
Intensive study of texts for comprehension and structural elements, i.e. coherence and cohesion.
Writing opinion paragraphs and summaries, and in-class analysis of student-written paragraphs.
Final written exam consisting of reading and writing skills tasks.
