612015 VU Selected Aspects of Eastern European, Central European and Southeastern European Cultures and Societies: History and Society in the Bosnian-Croatian-Serbian Novel (from the 19th Century to the Present)
summer semester 2023 | Last update: 19.04.2023 | Place course on memo listStudents are familiar with the most important varieties of the Bosnian-Croatian-Serbian novel, they can describe and evaluate the historical designs and social diagnoses of central works.
In Bosnian-Croatian-Serbian literature, the novel only succeeded the epic songs and stories towards the end of the 19th century. From this point on, however, the large prose genre dominates the literary field - as it does everywhere in Europe.
In its various formal variants (such as the autobiographical, historical or postmodern form), the novel is particularly well suited to express the specifics of an era and the corresponding social transformations. By reading novels, we learn about Austrian history, society in the Kingdom and in the Socialist Republic of Yugoslavia, as well as the social upheavals in the post-Yugoslav region.
On the basis of selected works, the most important varieties and historical-social themes of the Bosnian-Croatian-Serbian novel will be presented and discussed. They range from Stevan Sremac's Pop Ćira i pop Spira (Popen sind auch nur Menschen) from 1894 to Ivo Andrić's Na Drini ćuprija (The Bridge over the Drina) from 1945 to Lana Bastašić's Uhvati zeca (Catch the Rabbit) from 2018.
Regular alternation between lecture (by the course instructor) and exercise (presentations by the students with discussion) on the primary texts.
Regular attendance and active participation in the exercise sessions; reading of selected works or excerpts from the same; presentations; written work
Primary works to be covered are expected to include:
Stevan Sremac: Pop Ćira i pop Spira (Popen sind auch nur Menschen; Auszüge) Miroslav Krleža: Povratak Filipa Latinovicza (Die Rückkehr des Filip Latinovicz); Ivo Andrić: Na Drini ćuprija (Die Brücke über die Drina); Danilo Kiš: Bašta, pepeo (Garten, Asche); Dubravka Ugrešić: Štefica Cvek u raljama života (patchwork roman); Miljenko Jergović: Buick Rivera und Lana Bastašić: Uhvati zeca (Fang den Hasen)
