Students are able to master simple design and planning tasks. They are  able to analyse a design task, to formulate an architectural programme, to create a spatial concept and to translate it into an architectural design of a high aesthetic level. You are able to develop, represent and present a project.

Architectural tasks for developing an advanced study of the design process and training of the personal creative ability; learning to understand design as a complex decision-making process; integration of designrelevant influencing factors

Hugging Trees

focuses on exploring the spatial relationship between giant, old trees, historic buildings, and the space in between.

The project involves designing a 1000 square meter space that is embedded between nature and architecture, including an event and concert canopy. To meet the requirements of a potentially mobile, adaptive, or transformable yet delicate and extremely lightweight canopy in this specific context, different concepts and methods of lightweight structures and their design are being researched. While creating sophisticated surfaces, the focus is on volumes, spaces, and atmospheres.

Lightweight design follows unconventional laws, and success lies in respecting the interplay of geometry, structure, and material as well as the existing historical buildings and trees that need to be "hugged".

Methods include examining architecture-relevant biomimetic principles, developing and discussing concepts and methods of lightweight construction and design, using digital methods and analytical investigations, testing materials, applying constructive principles and methods including tests and simulations.

Our approach includes visiting and documenting the site, exploring biomimetic principles, developing lightweight construction concepts, model and material studies, scientific and creative thinking, writing and research, working in variations, contextual conception and constructive, material-appropriate elaboration, technical and atmospheric representations, model-building and simulation, and presentation using various media.

Organization. The projects are done individually at the beginning of the semester and can be continued and further developed in groups of 2, depending on what makes sense. Our focus is on joint discussion of the topic and the various solutions and approaches. Weekly meetings take place in person. We value active communication and sharing of knowledge, experiences, techniques and methods, between and with our students. Therefore, our schedules and meetings (probably Wednesdays) are meant to start, work, discuss and finish together.

Course examination according to § 6, statute section on "study-law regulations".

A list of relevant literature will be provided.

successful completion of compulsory modules 1, 2 and 3
