Students are able to master simple design and planning tasks, which are the result of a constructive narrative. They are able to analyse a design task, to formulate an architectural programme, to create a spatial concept and to translate it into an architectural design of a high aesthetic level.

Studio Colletti: Digital and Computational Design will be employed in order to invest in the nature of experimental design.

Studio Schmidbaur: Exercises and experiments use different analogue and digital working environments.

The course will explore the brief of "Throne Room Procession" during the SS 2022/23 Semester. 

The archetypical concept of "Procession", a ceremonial and organized in an orderly fashion movement of people, evolves throughout history in different forms, while maintaining its basic principles intact. There's always a linear process involved and the ceremonial destination which in terms of powers and authority many times is expressed in a King's room. A Throne Room. 

This studio investigates and designs a Throne Room as an expression of a individual narrative created by each student, which should involve the creation of a compeling back-story as a driving force for the Throne room.

Architectural tasks for developing and advanced study of the design process and training of the personal creative ability; learning to understand design as a complex decision-making process; integration of design relevant influencing factors.

What's the difference?

Prototypical spatial installations in 1:X-1:1

In this semester we design, construct and build prototypical, spatial installations in a scale of 1:X - 1:1. The installations are walk-in and can be physically experienced. Individual projects are related to each other in an overall spatial configuration/composition and made accessible to the public in a concluding exhibition. A space of different impressions, of its own temporality and terminology, should be created, which takes up and reflects on traditional and contemporary questions of architecture. The aim of the semester is the design and realization of an architectural, prototypical spatial sculpture/sculpture on a large scale (1:X - 1:1).

The experimental work is created based on intuitive and analytical study models and a design idea derived from this that is consistently developed with a focus on form, space and material.

Studio Schmidbaur:

We work iteratively and multimedially. We work individually, in teams-of-two and together in the whole group (joint spatial concept and exhibition). Individual exercises and experiments use different analogue and digital work environments to explore the sought-after spatial and formal, material and immaterial qualities of the (spatial) prototype and common space to be designed.
