The students know and understand different scientific-theoretical and methodological perspectives in educational science and can explain their basic terms, concepts and theories, compare them with each other and relate them to different questions and research fields. They understand the methodological and methodological approaches resulting from the different scientific-theoretical traditions and can explain them and illustrate them with examples. They are able to reproduce scientific-theoretical debates, to classify research work in terms of scientific theory, methodology and history, and to adopt a deliberative-critical scientific-theoretical and methodological attitude. They know and understand selected philosophical and historical survey and evaluation methods in educational science and are able to relate, apply and justify these to educational science issues.

Beginning with the modern approaches of rationalism and empiricism, the course spans postivism, neo-positivism (Vienna Circle), crystalline rationalism and the Frankfurt School. The second part focuses on the theories of historiography and discourse analysis (including the inclusion of the visual).
