The graduates have basic methodological and theoretical knowledge of media and communication research and are able to critically assess research results. Furthermore, they have a basic understanding of the applicability of theories of media and communication studies.

This VU is an introduction to qualitative and quantitative methods of empirical media and communication research. After elaborating basic concepts and methodological foundations such as qualitative vs. quantitative paradigm and qualitative and quantitative research processes, we will actively deal with different methods (e.g. content analysis, image analysis, survey).

This VU is an introduction to qualitative and quantitative methods of empirical media and communication research. The students acquire basic concepts and methodological foundations and actively deal with central methods (e.g. content analysis, questioning, experiment). After completing the VU, they will be able to independently apply qualitative and quantitative research designs to investigate research questions in media and communication research.

Lecture with exercises by students

Participation (individual or group exercises on the respective topic of the unit, preparation of compulsory reading) and timely submission of exercise assignments.

The minor “Media and Communication” covering 30 ECTS-Credits can be selected by degree students  of  Bachelor’s  programmes  at  the  University  of  Innsbruck,  providing  the  relevant curriculum allows for the option to pass a minor.
