The students have acquired the ability to use digital communication constellations to judge their individual, organisational and social impact. They have in-depth knowledge of media and communication science in a specific sub-area of the subject.

Exemplary examination of current specialist scientific discourses with regard to the practical processing of concrete tasks in a selected topic area.

The course focuses on the analysis of media systems in international comparison. At the end of the course, students will be able to explain the methods of a country comparison and are able to carry out their own country analysis on this basis according to a structured procedure.
Of particular interest are the aspects of internet / social media and democracies in selected countries. What role do laws play at the European level, such as the Digital Services Act, the Charter of Fundamental Rights and the European Media Freedom Act. What implications do these developments have for the aspects of democracy, freedom of expression and freedom of the press?

Lecture with exercises, analysis of relevant sources / reports, presentation, discussion

Submission of a country analysis, presentation, handout, discussion group

The minor “Media and Communication” covering 30 ECTS-Credits can be selected by degree students of Bachelor’s programmes at the University of Innsbruck, providing the relevant curriculum allows for the option to pass a minor.
