Due to the examination of current research positions, acquisition of a receptive and productive competence to participate in scientific discourses.

Ability to critically deal with different descriptive and research approaches as well as with different empirical methods. In addition, the ability to collect and analyze data according to the research question and to interpret it on the basis of received research literature.

Linguistic gender research is concerned with the influence of the social variable gender on 'language' and 'speaking', i.e. on the language system and on speech and conversational behavior. The aim of this sociolinguistic sub-discipline, which was founded about 40 years ago, is to show how femininity(ies), masculinity(ies) and in-between as well as trans identities are (co-)shaped linguistically and communicatively. Different quantifying and qualitative-interpretative methods are used. Within the discipline a broad spectrum of questions has developed, which address topics such as word formation, grammatical genus and personal references (problematic 'gendering') as well as conversational behavior and gender constructions on the Internet. The latter topic also includes the consideration of (audio-)visual data such as videos and selfies.

The overview of current issues, approaches and research results will be discussed together on the basis of selected studies.

Lecture and input; (preparatory) reading and discussion of research literature as a basis for the planning of a small research project (research question, methodology, data collection)

Two short presentations, a short summary of the project.

If the course should be counted as a Seminar, one short presentation and a term paper are obligatory.
