Survey of American TV and streaming series and their narratological features

The seminar analyzes TV and streaming series with overarching plotlines. We will start with early examples of the late 20th century and then put the major focus on recent series. At the center of attention are narratological questions with respect to serial formats. Examples discussed in class include: Twin Peaks, The Sopranos, The Wire, House of Cards, Mad Men, Dexter, Mr. Robot, Breaking Bad, True Detective, Better Call Saul, Game of Thrones, and Fleabag. Students are encouraged to bring their own ideas for series that they want to have included in the seminar. In the first session of class, we will decide together which additional series will be part of the syllabus.
