Comprehension of the various functions of text patterns; insight in the hybridity of modern text types; different translation strategies that apply to fictional, non-fictional and hybrid texts.

Insight into the use of linguistic and non-linguistic means in texts. Features constituting fictional and non-fictional texts. Effects produced by the combination of various semiotic elements (e.g. words and graphic elements). Contrastive textology.

Analysis of functions of given texts in different contexts (e.g. recipe in a cookery-book vs. recipe in a novel; poem as literary text vs. poem as anthem). Discussion of the consequences of these insights for the translator / interpreter.

The assessment consists of two parts:

1) presentation about the subjects discussed in class

2) Individual analysis of a fictional text or a text containing fictional components.
