This course is designed to help students develop the necessary skills to translate technical texts dealing with economics and business from English into German. Areas of focus include researching and using correct technical terminology, developing students' background knowledge on economics and translating texts in accordance with text conventions in the target language.

We analyze and translate a range of different texts dealing with business and economics, focusing on terminological precison and consistency, nuances of meaning and cohesion, typical translation difficulties and common sources of error. Preparatory assignments require students to inform themselves on the economic/business issues addressed in each text.

Reading, research and translation assignments; use of parallel texts; comparison and discussion of translations in class.

Mid-term and end-of-term tests; active participation in class and completion of all assignments.

All handouts and translation assignments will be provided on OLAT. In order to develop the necessary background knowledge and language, students should regularly read specialist magazines and newspapers in English (e.g. The Wall Street Journal, The EconomistThe Financial Times) and the business sections in German language newspapers.

Participants must be enrolled in one of the master's degree programs in translation studies.
