Students will improve their understanding and knowledge of the history of the French language.

We will focus on the processes that created the French language, on processes like the enrichment of the French language or also purist tendencies, the turn to languages for special purpose, the linguistic changes caused by the French Revolution and modern French language policies, including normative approaches.

Lecture; eventually reading tasks

Oral exam (two repetitions possible).

All course materials and assignments will be made available on OLAT.

In order to attend this course, students need to have passed the compulsory module 4 or 7.

Until successful completion of the entrance and orientation phase of studies (StEOP), students may not acquire more than a maximum of 22 ECTS points overall.
