A well-considered approach to contemporary art discourses around computer games

In art history, the dispute over the recognition of various media formats as art is not unknown. Be it in the case of arts and crafts or design or, in more recent art history, the discourses surrounding the art-worthiness of photography as well as film. In the same way, today the question of artistic value also concerns computer games, which are striving for cultural recognition. The seminar will therefore focus on independent games and art games, which often seek to set themselves apart from so-called mainstream games in the sense of higher ambitions or an increased artistic quality. Central questions will be which ideas of art underlie the respective games, how they relate to historical theories of art and how the connections between game design and contemporary art creation are formed today
