640026 SE Research Discourse: Everyday Life in Greco-Roman Egypt
winter semester 2023/2024 | Last update: 22.11.2023 | Place course on memo listThe students have special knowledge of methods and theories in Classical and Ancient Studies. They have the knowledge to be able to deal with subject-specific, interdisciplinary and genderspecific issues. The students have competences to actively participate in scientific discourse and to communicate and present scientific results.
Due to their grounding in the present, historical research inevitably ties in with current developments and socio-political debates when raising a specific topic. This very fact becomes even more evident in the field of research referred to as microhistory or Alltagsgeschichte. Its aim is to examine the relationships, patterns of action and perception of individuals or social strata in a time-limited as well as locally restricted environment and to classify them as case studies in a larger context of meaning. Any kind of knowledge gained by employing inductive methods can support lines of an argumentation following deductive rules. But at the same time, it also might as well reveal potential contradictions arising from them. This seminar provides an opportunity to get to the bottom of this discursive interrelationship by comparing some views and arguments found in scholarly literature with results of single case research or source material that gives first-hand information about the daily life in Graeco-Roman Egypt. The range of topics to be covered relates to broader subject areas such as intercultural contacts and transformation processes, constructs of identities and gender roles as well as experiences of conflict and crisis.
Collaborative as well as individual reading (journal articles, excerpts or chapters selected from monographs), class discussion.
Physical presence and participation (absence is allowed only once and requires a valid excuse), presentation, essay. Each constitutes one third of the overall grade.
