  • Insight in the relationships between linguistic competence, language use and linguistic norms
  • Knowledge of descriptive grammatical terminology
  • Practical skills in applying this knowledge to example texts

The first part of this course treats the distinction between linguistic competence and language use as well as the origin and influence of standardized languages. Then, a range of linguistic phenomena and the expressions used to refer to them will be treated. Priority will be given to concepts that are essential in Translation Studies.

Yule, George (2023), The Study of Language, 8th edition, Cambridge: Cambridge University Press.

Before full completion of StEOP, courses may only be brought forward up to a maximum of 22 ECTS-AP.
