Conservation-restoration: basic principles, scientific methods of examination, museological aspects

Block event I: Innsbruck

In the first block course in Innsbruck, the technological structure of paintings will be presented on the basis of concrete examples. A theoretical introduction is followed by a presentation of the most important materials used in painting, such as pigments, binders, fillers for primers and resins for the production of varnishes. Predominantly historical painting techniques based on selected paintings will be explained and discussed in the display collection of the Tyrolean Regional Museums.

Block event II: Vienna

The second block event will take place on two consecutive days in Vienna. At the Academy of Fine Arts, the conservation studios for various disciplines will be visited at the Institute for Conservation-Restoration and basic principles of conservation-restoration will be explained with examples.

At the Institute for Science and Technology in Art of the Academy of Fine Arts, examination methods will be presented in a lecture and then demonstrated with the appropriate equipment.

On the second day, museological aspects of conservation-restoration will be addressed by means of exhibition presentations at the MAK, Austrian Museum of Applied Arts. Issues of loan and its importance for works of art will also be discussed. Another perspective is preventive conservation, which aims to ensure the preservation of entire collections and prevent the development or progression of damage.

Continuous assessment (based on regular written and/or oral contribution by participants).
