Acquisition of basic knowledge and application of relevant methods aiding scientific research.
The course deals with the most important events and developments in the regional history of South Tyrol in the "short 20th century". The students work on, deepen and present core topics of political history: the annexation of Trentino-Alto Adige by Italy, fascist and National Socialist rule in the province, the effects of the resettlement agreement (option), forms of anti-fascist resistance, defascization and denazification, the development of the First and Second Autonomy Statutes and the emergence of German nationalist and neo-fascist South Tyrolean terrorism up to the international settlement of the South Tyrol dispute between Austria and Italy before the UN in 1992. Exemplary insights into social and cultural history (e.g. the history of tourism, literary history) are interspersed with the ongoing treatment of political history. The methodological guideline is a comparative view of South Tyrolean regional history, i.e. selective comparisons are made with the neighboring regions of Tyrol and Trentino and embedded in national and global historical narratives; the regional historical literature in German and Italian serves as a basis.
Individual acquirement of a historical survey; oral presentations and handouts, research paper, discussion; internet search, exercises.
