The German Throne Dispute between Philipp of Swabia and Otto IV. is a central event in the history of the medieval Holy Roman Empire. From the double-election 1198 to the battle of Bouvines 1214 the conflict not only transformed the constitution of the Empire but also changed the relations of the great European monarchies.
The lecture tends to trace the history of the conflict in it’s European dimensions and to analyze it’s impact on the political structure of the Empire. By examining sources of different kind mechanisms of waging conflict and concluding peace as well as the role of the princes will be outlined. The papacy under Innocenz III and crucial ideas and concepts will also be taken into account. The versatile aspects of medieval research are to be illustrated by means of different approaches.
Reading of specialized literature, joint discussion and working with medieval sources. Part of the work assignments will be elaborated in small groups.
