Acquisition of basic skills for dealing with historic sources and presentations of Austrian History as well as skills in presenting the newly acquired knowledge orally as well as in writing. Acquisition of basic knowledge and application of relevant methods aiding scientific research.

Based on key serial sources of the long 19th century in Habsburg Central Europe - Schematismus, Kataster, Zensus and other similar publication series - a socio-historical perspective on the social transformation of this area during the period under investigation is developed.

The methodological focus is on the utilisation of these sources with the help of the latest digital technologies, machine learning and deep learning.

Parallel to the content-related development of the subject matter, students acquire basic knowledge for the critical examination and application of these technologies for historical use.

The course is organised on three levels: Preparatory reading, intensive discussion in the plenary session, and the guided exploration and analysis of relevant sources, potentially with the assistance of new technical tools.

In the plenary session, there is constant critical contextualisation of the jointly developed content. Comprehensive technical and professional support will ensure that students can successfully work through the content.

Students will be introduced to a wide range of relevant primary source series and will apply the knowledge and skills acquired in the course to small sections of their own choice.

The course has an immanent examination character; in addition to a proseminar paper, a research journal will be compiled and form the basis of the performance assessment. If necessary, presentations or spontaneous presentations will have to be given, and participation in the plenary discussion will also be part of the continuous assessment of competence acquisition.

Positive assessment of compulsory module 1. The respective proof ought to be produced until the end of March 2023.
