Basic knowledge of aesthetics and philosophy of art. Students will have gained an insight into fundamental issues in the philosophy of art and will have learnt to think critically about art and aesthetic value judgements.  

Philosophy of Art: This seminar deals with the main issues in the philosophy of art. These include, in particular, questions about the nature of art (in its many manifestations), its value, the ontology of works of art, and the nature and validity of aesthetic value judgements. What is art and what are its functions? Is there any satisfactory definition of art? Why do we value art? Does it increase our knowledge of the world or can or should it rather be "l'art pour l'art"? What is the ontology of an artwork? (Why do we value originals more than copies?) Are value judgments about works of art a subjective matter of taste or can they be justified intersubjectively?
