A basic understanding of the philosophy of the art of living, including the question of happiness and the so-called cardinal virtues (prudence, justice, courage, and moderation), an overview of some important authors from the history of spirituality in the West. 

In ancient Europe, the question of the good life was considered the central question of philosophical ethics. Today, many expect that spirituality can contribute to the good life. Seminar participants will read and (critically) discuss fundamental texts from both areas. The texts are taken from ancient, medieval and modern philosophy (e.g. Seneca, Thomas Aquinas, O. Höffe, J. Pieper) and from different traditions of spirituality (Johannes Tauler, Teresa of Avila, Ignatius of Loyola et al).
