930001 VO Theories of Gender Relations
winter semester 2024/2025 | Last update: 09.12.2024 | Place course on memo listThe students are familiar with canonical gender theories in social sciences and know how to define main questions of gender studies. They are able to classify the relevance of gender als a fundamental structural category in social contexts. They have knowledge about social movement theories and about the connectivity of gender studies to humanities, cultural studies, social sciences and economics.
The lecture provides a survey of gender theories, the continuities and turns within feminist theories as well of the transcultural gender studies. The questions “what is gender?” and “how does gender structure society, politics, economy and social relations?” are discussed through introducing feminist-materialist approaches, feminist socialization theory, queer theory, trans* studies, intersectionality approaches, post- and decolonial theories. Furthermore, we also focus on the interplay between feminist theory and social movements and discuss the relevance of trans- and interdisciplinarity for gender studies.
