930003 SE Theories of Gender Relations: From feminist to queer to queer-feminist approaches? Basics, continuities and ruptures in gender theories
winter semester 2024/2025 | Last update: 04.12.2024 | Place course on memo listIn the course, selected basic texts of feminist theory and queer theory will be studied by means of close reading. The aim is to introduce students to canonical feminist and queer texts. Furthermore, the students should learn to view continuities and controversies on the epistemological, theoretical and political level between feminist and queer theories.
In the seminar, "classic" texts from feminist theory will be brought into a dialogue with "classic" texts from queer theory. By means of this text tandem, key concepts such as gender, body, power, violence, subject, labour and critique will be discussed.
One aim of the seminar is to discuss the differences in feminist and queer theoretical approaches. The other aim is to focus on overlaps and fruitful connections where feminist and queer approaches can be combined into a queer-feminist perspective in order to deepen the analysis of gendered, heteronormative power and domination relations. This will also help to overcome the often unproductive stalemate between feminist and queer/deconstructionist approaches and the mutual accusations of not being analytical or radical enough, and to use the different foci for the further development of a critical, queer-feminist social theory.
