Elective Module 1: Language and Society (10 ECTS-Credits; 4 h)
Prerequisites for registration: none
Learning Outcome: The students know the basic theories and methods in sociolinguistics and linguistics of varieties. They know about the diversity of speech and language(s) in different socio-spatial contexts. They are able to describe language as a social phenomenon in its mutual relation to space and society and to critically question it in the context of social transformation processes.
Elective Module 2: Linguistic Diversity (10 ECTS-Credits; 6 h)
Prerequisites for registration: none
Learning Outcome: Students have a basic knowledge of sociolinguistics and typological areal linguistics. They can recognise areal and social stratifications of language and have the ability to analyse their effects and functions.
Elective Module 3: Humans and Space (10 ECTS-Credits; 6 h)
Prerequisites for registration: none
Learning Outcome: The students acquire an overview of theoretical-methodological foundations of the relationships between space and society. They are able to analyse, understand and explain complex socio-spatial structures, processes and interactions.
Elective Module 4: Culture and Region (10 ECTS-Credits; 4 h)
Prerequisites for registration: none
Learning Outcome: The students have knowledge of basic positions in cultural theory and develop an awareness of problems in cultural studies. Students can formulate regional-specific questions in consideration of critical reflection of social perception categories. They are able to identify and classify cultural studies research approaches and to answer research questions by using adequate methods.
Elective Module 5: Society and History (10 ECTS-Credits; 4 h)

Learning Outcome: Students have exemplary knowledge of the worldwide interconnections of historical developments and the interdependencies between historical micro and macro levels. They can substantiate and critically discuss the special epistemological opportunities of global or small-scale perspectives on history on the basis of selected examples. Furthermore, they are able to argue the linkage of empirical research to questions in the theory of science or to social and political framework conditions on the basis of central paradigms.
Elective Module 6: Social Structure and Identity (10 ECTS-Credits; 4 h)

Prerequisites for registration: none
Learning Outcome: The students can reproduce the essential theoretical approaches of interpretative sociology and explain their basic terminology. They can also describe current topics and research perspectives in everyday and cultural-sociological analyses. In particular, they are able to critically discuss identity constructions in the context of social misconception and recognition based on sociological identity theories as well as theoretical impulses from related fields. They can identify central theses and lines of argument and reproduce them without falsification. In addition, they are able to apply theoretical concepts to empirical phenomena as an example of research.
