Students gain an insight into important current trends in the connection between psychoanalysis and social theory. They expand their skills in dealing with complex theoretical texts and approaches.

Based on the approaches of the Frankfurt School and its efforts to make psychoanalysis fruitful for approaches to social theory, the seminar explores the question of how this connection between psychoanalysis and society is practised in the present. Approaches of the so-called School of Ljubljana will be presented, which have been trying to understand late capitalist societies in their own combination of Lacan and Marx since the 1990s. While the older Freudo-Marxism of the Frankfurt School had the Fordist society in mind, these newer approaches are concerned with the period after 1970, i.e. the epoch that is generally referred to as neoliberalism and in which we still live today. In doing so, we will also explore the theoretical-historical question of how these newer approaches differ from their predecessor, the Freudo-Marxism of the Frankfurt School.
