202106 VO Special Topics in Contemporary Epistemology
summer semester 2022 | Last update: 07.04.2022 | Place course on memo listStudents know the most important epistemological terms and positions and can present them independently and in a context-appropriate manner. They are able to independently and critically examine their justifications as well as special concepts from the current epistemological discussion.
It is widely acknowledged in the literature in social epistemology that knowledge has a social dimension: most of what we know we learned it from others; and very often, we are not in the position to personally justify the contents that we reasonably believe - because somebody else, whom we trust, has access to the evidence speaking for these contents’ truth. Knowledge, thus, clearly allows for a division of cognitive labour. But what about other epistemic aims, such as understanding? Can our understanding, like our knowledge, be grounded on the epistemic achievement of somebody else? Or is understanding rather a subjective achievement, creditable to the single epistemic agent who understands?
A 45-minutes long lecture will be recorded and uploaded online approximately one week before every meeting. We will then meet online via Webconference/BigBlueBotton every week for a 45-minutes long discussion about the topics addressed in the lecture.
