609192 VU Gender Studies
Sommersemester 2023 | Stand: 22.06.2023 | LV auf Merkliste setzenStudents will familiarize themselves with key concepts, trends, and directions in the field of Gender Studies. They will train the reading of theoretical texts and practice how to apply them in their own analyses of primary material, thus gaining insight into the interrelation between gender identities and different sociocultural contexts.
Gender is a pervasive concept in our everyday existence. We live in a society in which even shower products are assigned masculine or feminine qualities. In this course, we will read a range of theoretical texts proposing different ways of thinking critically about gender. In particular, we will be interested in theorists who examine the ways in which conceptualizations of gender have been used to create, cement, or question hierarchies. Besides reading and discussing a range of theoretical texts, we will concentrate on a main case study: we will apply some of the theories to Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale (both the 1985 novel and its renaissance as as TV series).
The course ties in with the 1-day workshop “The Handmaid’s Tale Revisited”, which will be held on Friday, June 2ndand will include poster presentations on the part of the students. Attendance of this workshop is part of the course requirements, so please make sure to save this date.
